While researching a presentation on Maximalism in Quilting, I came across a stunning fabric designed by the French artist Odile Bailloeul. Fabrics in the “Tropicalism” collection soon found their way into my shopping cart (after all, I deserved a treat after making the presentation, right?). Now what to do with yards and yards of these luscious fabrics? Use them to their best advantage by keeping the pattern somewhat simple and letting the complexity of the fabric shine. Using Jane Sassaman’s 2012 book Patchwork Sassaman Style: Recipes for Dazzling Quilts for inspiration, I selected a simple nine patch with sashings to begin the fun. Quilting was kept simple so as not to compete with the fabric. A faux piped binding around the edge provided the perfect finish.
I still have yards and yards of Tropicalism to play with - what will come next, I wonder?
