I had wanted to construct this traditional pattern with English Paper Piecing, but stiff and crampy hands soon convinced me to fall back on my usual hand piecing technique instead. (Thank goodness I did not first prepare hundreds of 1” paper pieces for EPP!) The Patchwork of the Crosses (also known as Lucy Boston) pattern offers a great deal of fun in creative fabric arranging. Vintage-looking late 19th century reproduction fabrics served as my color palette.
The entire top is hand pieced (which took about 18 months), the binding is attached via machine, and the wonky quilting was accomplished with free motion and walking foot techniques on a stationary machine.
